MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Google announced a new feature in Google Maps today. The feature is called “Green Routes.” It gives drivers a more eco-friendly travel option. This tool shows routes that likely use less fuel. These routes might take a bit longer. But they help lower a trip’s carbon footprint.
Driving contributes significantly to carbon emissions. Google wants to help people make greener choices. The “Green Routes” feature calculates fuel consumption for different paths. It uses factors like road incline and traffic patterns. This calculation happens alongside the fastest route.
When users enter a destination, Maps shows the fastest route. Now, it will also show a “Green Route” if available. This route will display an estimated fuel savings percentage. Users can see the time difference between the fastest and greenest options. They can then choose the route they prefer.
Rebecca Moore, Director of Google Earth, commented on the launch. She said, “We built this to empower people. Everyone should have access to sustainable choices. This includes daily travel decisions.” Moore emphasized the feature’s potential impact. She noted small changes in driving habits add up.
The “Green Routes” option is rolling out first in the United States. It will be available on Android and iOS devices. Google plans to expand it to more countries later this year. The company is also working on including other vehicle types. This includes hybrids and electric vehicles.
